T-Boz, lead singer of Grammy Award winning trio TLC alongside group members Chilli and the late Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes, was recently the first guest of the year on LSORadio 99.1 (Lighter Shade of Radio). During her friendly chat with show host ODM (One Dope Mexican), formerly of early ’90s Hip Hop duo Lighter Shade Of Brown, the singer discussed the origins of the groundbreaking R&B group’s style and the controversy surrounding their promotion of safe sex.

“Lisa [Left Eye] came up with the whole condom bit, I used to dress us [from the] hairstyle [to the] sideburn thing and they thought I was retarded for that – they was like, “that’s not hot,” until all the girls were copying it in the hair salons.”

She continued, “It wasn’t the fact that we were telling kids too have sex, we were just saying [to] the ones who were having sex and the parents that were in denial about their kids having sex just be real… If you’re gonna do it protect yourself while you’re doing it. So we just made it a fashion statement.”

On future projects and plans, the ATL native discussed TLC’s VH1 backed movie currently in the works. “They’re starting to do movies on VH1. They’re doing icons and legends and we’re the first of the movies. Its exciting but that’s another “Waterfalls” VMA… it’s scary.”

I think I speak for all ’80s babies and everyone at SoulCulture when I say… I can’t wait to watch the movie when it drops.
