Boardwalk Empire is one of the best shows on TV; easily one of the best shows of recent years, if not all time.
Readers be warned: spoilers ahead.
The crime-drama combines the narrative sophistication of The Sopranos (though not quite as sophisticated), with the loose historical accuracy, bringing the world’s greatest gangsters to life in a with a stunning series that delves into the world of prohibition era crime syndicates; the likes of Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Arnold Rothstein featuring prominently.
The star of the show, however, is Enoch “Nucky” Thompson; based on former Atlantic City political figure Enoch L. Johnson. Boardwalk Empire’s Nucky is Atlantic City. He’s a businessman, politician, kingmaker, father, husband, patron and, more than ever, a gangster.
The show’s brand new Season Three trailer says it all. It depicts the brilliant and wily master crook in dangerous and pensive mood; reliving the most pained and brutal act of his shady career, gunning down his one-time protege and “son” – Jimmy Darmody.
If you learn one thing from the trailer, let it be this: ain’t no half steppin’. There’s no such thing as half a gangster. You either go in or go in.
Nucky is about to learn.
