Bailey is one of the most renowned black tattoo artists in the world, and Color Outside the Lines was born from his desire to educate the world on not just the history of tattooing — a story that’s already been told repeatedly — but the widely unknown or misunderstood history of the black artist within the culture. The film looks to spread the fact that there are many highly-skilled black tattooists in the world and break the misguided notion that they’re not as good as the rest.
“The film highlights the history of black tattoo culture and how it began in the south despite a heavily segregated climate for black artists seeking entry. We cover signature styles and how those styles have developed and influenced newer artists over the years,” director Artemus Jenkins says on the film’s official website.
“Aside from the art, we delve into the personal struggles associated with being an artist; how it affects your social life, personal relationships and other dreams you may have. … The story we are telling is multifaceted and unique, if not for the chance meeting between myself and Miya Bailey, it may possibly have gone untold.”
Color Outside the Lines is coming soon.
