The script for the upcoming Scarface remake that was written by David Ayer (Training Day) is now being rewritten by Oscar-nominated writer Paul Attanasio, who wrote the screenplay for 1997′s critically acclaimed Donnie Brasco.

The story is expected to be a fusion of the 1983 cult-classic starring Al Pacino and the original 1932 film from which it was based, though Deadline notes that Universal Pictures has not yet released the main character’s ethnic and geographical background, both of which were pivotal to the previous versions.

With The Sun having reported that Rihanna is pursuing the role of female lead back in August (taken by Michelle Phieffer in the 1983 film), the film could yet be very different to past iterations.
