After taking home the narrative award at SXSW and making the cut at Sundance and Cannes, Adam Leon’s debut feature Gimme the Loot finally bags a release date in the UK for early March.
Those expecting another Biggie biopic won’t find what they’re looking for here – Gimme The Loot follows teens Malcolm and Sofia as they hustle their way through the rundown blocks of the Bronx to tag the iconic Mets stadium apple. An endearing and understated flick as much about rites of passage as graffiti culture, Gimme the Loot sits somewhere between The Wackness, How To Make It In America and Do The Right Thing.
Set to a funky retro soul soundtrack handpicked by Leon, there’s little in the way of Biggie but there’s a candid hip-hop aesthetic running through the film’s core and more than enough for fans of ‘bombing’ (not bombing) to sink their spray cans into. Leon does a lot in the way of giving street art some positive press by using New York as his cinematic playground over two sun-kissed days and telling his story through a pair of sympathetic eyes, newcomers Ty Hickson and Tashiana Washington, who also make their feature debut here.
