Empire Online reports that Hollywood megastar Will Smith is in talks to head behind the camera and sit in the director’s chair for the first time to helm Sony’s Biblical epic The Redemption of Cain.

Co-written by Dan Knauf and Caleb Pinkett, younger brother of The Fresh Prince’s better half, Jada Pinkett Smith, the prospective film’s script is being worked over by World Trade Center scribe Andrea Berloff.

The latest in a line of rumoured and upcoming Biblical motion pictures, The Redemption of Cain joins Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah and Ridley Scott‘s mooted Moses epic in the production pipeline, highlighting the resurgence of grand, large-scale Biblical projects taking hold of Tinseltown.

Originally titled The Legend of Cain, Redemption takes the Biblical account of the relationship between Cain and Abel — sons of Adam and Eve — to the big screen, adapting the Book of Genesis allegory to explore the religious, spiritual and familial motifs of the brothers’ conflicts.

Smith has been attached to the project for some time and is slated to star in the film as well as direct. With several projects in the works for the famed rapper-cum-actor, it may take some time before we line up to watch The Redemption of Cain.
