Although summer is just starting to heat up, cinema-goers can already start looking forward to the Christmas holiday season, as several big motion pictures are due for release around mid-December.

Disney has decided to move the 3D re-release of Monsters Inc. up from January 13 to December 19, joining the likes of Judd Apatow’s This Is 40, the Tom Cruise blockbuster Jack Reacher, and Kathryn Bigelow’s Navy SEAL Team 6 film Zero Dark Thirty, which dramatises the assassination of Osama Bin Laden. The eagerly-awaited film stars Parks and Recreation‘s Chris Pratt, Friday Night Lights legendary coach Kyle Chandler and belle of the day Jessica Chastain.

A host of high-profile releases will crowd the Christmas schedule even more, with Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained, Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby and the Seth Rogen/Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip all opening on Xmas eve.

In other news, 20th Century Fox has revealed that upcoming drama Runner, Runner will be released on September 27, 2013. The movie is directed by The Lincoln Lawyer filmmaker Brad Furman and stars Justin Timberlake as a Princeton student cheated out of his tuition money playing online poker. The film also stars Ben Affleck, Anthony Mackie, British actress Gemma Arterton and Project X‘s Oliver Cooper.

The Liam Hemsworth thriller Paranoia, starring veteran actors Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford, is also set to be released next September.
