Man of the moment, Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct the sequel to Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.

The news comes as a major boost to Marvel, Disney and fanboys and girls all over the world, following the director’s statements at this year’s Comic-Con, raising doubts about his involvement with prospective Avengers sequels.

Marvel Studios have confirmed Whedon will be helming the follow up to the record-breaking super-hero flick, which is scheduled to be released in 2015.

Bob Iger – the Disney chief executive – added  Whedon will also be utilising his considerable talents to help develop a live-action TV series featuring Marvel characters.

Marvel Studios said in a statement, “Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015.”

“As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC.”

“He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.”
