Lenny Kravitz is set to appear as Marvin Gaye in a new, Julien Temple-directed biopic titled Midnight Love.

Deadline confirm that the singer/musician, who has previously appeared in a supporting capacity in the films Precious and The Hunger Games, will play Motown legend Gaye in a new motion picture directed by English music documentary and video director Temple.

The new role will be Kravitz’ first leading role and will focus on the early ’80s, when Gaye attempted to deal with his drug addiction and depression, restarting his career in Europe with the help of British music promoter Freddy Colsaerts. After releasing his great comeback hit “Sexual Healing” from Belgium in late 1982, the great soul singer was shot dead by his father a day shy of his 45th birthday.

The film, named after Gaye’s album of that name, will shoot next year, and we are pleased to pass on the information that Temple has already cleared the music rights for the project. Previous projects such as Marvin and Sexual Healing have failed to materialise in recent years, but let’s hope this is the real deal.
