Nearly 73 years after the release of the cult classic film The Wizard of Oz, Walt Disney Pictures have released the full trailer for the new prequel Oz: The Great and Powerful, which tells the story of just how the shy Wizard reached his mighty position in Emerald City.
Before his rise to power, Oscar Diggs, played by 127 Hours star James Franco, is a small-time circus magician until he is suddenly whisked away by a cyclone from Kansas to the magical Land of Oz, much like Dorothy. With the colourful world before him he think’s that he’s stumbled upon fame and fortune, until he meets three witches that are skeptical as to whether he’s the wizard everyone has been waiting for.
The film, directed by Sam Raimi (the Spider-Man trilogy), also stars Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams and Zach Braff, and has a nice throwback to the 4:3 black and white Kansas scenes of the original, as seen in the trailer below.
Oz: The Great and Powerful opens in UK cinemas on 8th March.
