Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut Submarine was met with critical acclaim following its 2010 release, and now we’ve got a peek at his follow-up, The Double.
Based on a 1846 short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the film centres on an unimportant government worker (Jesse Eisenberg) whose life is on the brink of destruction after he encounters a doppelganger that is attempting to ruin his life. According to Empire, Ayoade intends for the film to “reflect on loneliness and our inherent need to love and be loved.” Co-starring alongside Eisenberg are Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Rade Serbedzija, James Fox, Yasmin Paige and Noah Taylor.
Likely most well known for his role in The IT Crowd, Ayoade’s talents extend beyond acting, having written a number of stage-shows and directed videos for the Arctic Monkeys and Vampire Weekend among others.
Though a release date for The Double has yet to be announced, the film is currently in post-production and is expected to hit screens next year.
