Paul Thomas Anderson is one of those directors that aren’t just directors but “auteurs”. They are filmmakers.
With universally praised films such as Magnolia, Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood under his belt, films viewed as finely crafted classics, Anderson is held in the same regard as the Malicks and the Coens, and is often compared to Martin Scorsese.
Anderson’s films are unique, dramatic and marked by great storytelling. His upcoming film The Master bears the same traits, featuring a fantastic cast of performers in Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Walk the Line), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote, Doubt), Laura Dern (Jurassic Park, Enlightened) and Amy Adams (Junebug, The Figher), as well as the talented and striking Rami Malek (The War at Home).
Set in 1950s America, the film explores the relationship between a charismatic, deep thinking intellectual known as The Master – the leader of a growing faith based organisation – and a troubled drifter.
The Master is to be released later in the year, and would do well to replicate the success of There Will Be Blood. It looks interesting. Very interesting indeed.
