BBC’s magical drama Merlin returns for season five later this year. The popular show stars young actor Colin Morgan as the titular sorcerer, recounting the legendary character’s formative years in Camelot.
Created by the quartet of Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy, the adventure-fantasy features the likes of the fantastic John Hurt as The Dragon and beautiful Irish actress Katie McGrath as King Arthur’s half sister and powerful sorceress Lady Morgana Pendragon.
Influenced by the American TV show Smallville, Merlin takes a fresh look at the Arthurian legend, breathing new life into the lore and myths of the magical Camelot.
The fifth series of the BBC programme is said to have more of an “adult feel,” with McGrath explaining:
“It’s a three-year time jump, so… we’re all older. We were playing… very early 20s at the start, now I feel like we’ve all started to play adults, which for us is a great change.”
The upcoming season introduces some new faces, with Lindsay Duncan of Doctor Who fame, Game of Thrones‘ John Bradley and Entourage star Janet Montgomery all making appearances.
Though an official premiere date for the new series is yet to be confirmed, the BBC has unveiled a sparkly new trailer. Check it out below.
