In this episode of MTV’s This Is How I Made It they explore the come up of cutting edge R&B singer-songwriter Miguel as he tells his story from childhood up until his most recent success.
He speaks on his childhood and dealing with his mixed heritage of Mexican and Black decent and growing up in San Pedro, LA, at a time where there was a lot of animosity between the two cultures and he felt he was caught in the middle – something that he thinks spurred him to be the individual that we see today rather than letting people put him in a box of what he should be.
As Miguel grew older and his interest in music and writing grew, his epiphany came when he decided to stop writing his songs down on paper and started freestyling lyrics to music instead, which is how he came up with songs “Quickie,” “Vixen” and “Sure Thing” which was the song that got him signed to Jive Records.
After another freestyle session, this time with well respected and Grammy-nominated producer Salaam Remi, Miguel had written his first breakout hit “All I Want Is You,” which paved his way for success for more hit singles and albums.
