Naughty Dog has long been one of the most successful and beloved videogame developers ever since their classic 1996 PlayStation game Crash Bandicoot. Not only is the company much appreciated by fans, it has always been unafraid to switch lanes and try new challenges, a fact made evident in 2001’s cult hit Jak & Daxter, and even more so with the Uncharted series, a realistic departure from their previous cartoon-like characters which began in 2007 and arguably hit it’s pinnacle so far with 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time.
With the Crash, Jak and Uncharted series each featuring three titles (Traveller’s Tales took over Crash Bandicoot after 1998’s Warped), fans and critics alike of Naughty Dog were looking forward to what the next game the developer was working after Uncharted 3, and were left intrigued after it’s unveiling during the Spike Video Game awards just over a year ago. That intrigued turned to widespread astonishment after the first gameplay trailer back in E3, it’s ending leaving many (myself included) stunned, and while it didn’t detail much about the story a newly released trailer gives us a better idea of the premise.
Titled The Last of Us, the game follows Joel and Ellie, two survivors in a post-apocalyptic America as they struggle to survive infected zombie-like beings and humans that will do anything to survive. Though the third-person run and (somewhat) gun gameplay may seem reminiscent of Uncharted the game itself seems a far more emotive and almost looks like a cross between The Road and The Walking Dead, which could never be a bad thing with Naughty Dog at the helm.
The Last of Us comes out for PlayStation 3 on May 7th, 2013.
