As expected both Adele and Ed Sheeran were The 2012 BRIT Awards biggest winners, picking up two gongs each at the annual ceremony celebrating the British music industry, which took place on February 21 in London.
Sheeran, who performed his hit single “Lego House” at the ceremony, walked away with British male solo artist and British breakthrough act thanking those who had helped his raised to the top of the British charts over the last year. ”I honestly didn’t think I’d get this one. I want to thank my family, the fans, every single promoter that has ever booked me, every single radio DJ that has ever played me, and my label.”
Capping off an incredible year was North Londoner Adele, as she took home the awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Album Of The Year for her record breaking body of work, 21. Upon receiving the award Adele said, “Nothing makes me prouder than coming home with six Grammys and then coming to the Brits and winning album of the year. I’m so proud to be British and to be flying the flag.”
Unfortunately, due to ridiculous time contraints the songwriter’s thank you speech had to be cut short by host James Corden – to which the singer replied by flipping the Brit Award organisers the bird. [See below]
In an interview backstage Adele wanted to clarify her actions as to clear up any confustion; ”I flipped the finger but it wasn’t to my fans. I’m sorry if I offended anyone but it was the suits that offended me.” She added, “Thank you all very much and thanks to my fans. I don’t want them to think I was swearing at them.”
Other notable winners on the night were X-Factor‘s manufactured Pop group One Direction, who won Best Single for their song “What Makes You Beautiful”, whilst British Group award went to Coldplay and Rihanna was crowned best International Female.
Lana Del Rey emotionally accepted her award for International Breakthrough stating, ”This award means much more to me than you know and I just want to say that without the support of everyone in this room and everyone in the UK I’d really be lost.”
