J Dilla‘s mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey is launching a record label that will focus primarily on managing unreleased music from the famed producer’s catalog, AllHipHop reports.
Along with handling Jay Dee’s catalog, the label, dubbed Ruff Draft Records, will also introduce new talent.
“We don’t know how many J Dilla’s we have out there,” Yancey told AHH. “Somebody has to find them.”
Later this month, Ruff Draft Records will celebrate its official launch and the pending release of a new J Dilla album entitled Rebirth of Detroit with an exclusive event featuring performances from the likes of Bishop Lamont, Detroit staples Guilty Simpson, Waajeed, DJ TJ the King, Kai Alce and more. There will also be a special performance from McKinley Jackson, father of deceased Detroit legend and longtime Eminem-affiliate Proof, who will be debuting his new group The Philanthropists of Soul.
The listening/launch party will be held May 25 at Detroit’s Magic Stick. Get your tickets here. Rebirth of Detroit drops June 12.
