The Roots of Q-Tip – OkayAfrica explores A Tribe Called Djola [Video]

A Tribe Called Quest
The cliche stands, you don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you’ve been.  Realistically, the cliche isn’t necessarily speaking of the origin of birth, or racial background — however, it could be used in that way as well. On that note, OkayAfrica have now started a series called The Roots Of in which they help trace artists’ DNA back to the country, detailing their tribe of ancestors.

The series began with ?uestlove and Black Thought of the legendary Roots crew, and this time around they help Q-Tip of the legendary Hip Hop group A Tribe Called Quest to find his African roots.

In this episode they test Q-Tip‘s maternal DNA with a q-tip (how ironic) and introduce him to someone from his tribe.  This is a pretty cool concept, and if you are interested in finding your African roots as far as the country, and tribe, get your DNA test at African Ancestry here.
