The braniac musician and creative talents that are Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, aka Gorillaz, have spread their wings even further and created their very own musical titled Monkey: Journey To The West.
The show is inspired by the Chinese novel, Journey To The West, and the guys have adapted the words, which date back to 1592, into a masterpiece of electronic music and performance all under the inspired direction of Chen Shi-Zheng. A New York-based theatre director, Shi-Zheng is an operatic and artistic powerhouse; one to be reckoned with.
With equal doses of animation and musical theatre – and a wealth of incredible characters such as ‘Pigsy’, ‘The Dragon Prince’ and ‘The Monkey King’ (see above) – this show is sure to be a treat for the tired old eye balls, and a delight for the brain; contortionists, acrobats and trapeze artists flood the stage on a regular basis.
The show will run at David H. Koch Theater in New York from July 6th – 28th, with two shows daily at 2pm and 8pm. Special ticket packages are available, where it is apparent that this show has been scoped from every angle; you can sip on a Magic Monkey martini while sitting in the best seats in the house with your Monkey souvenir.
