A tweet from Ed Sheeran and some serious talent to back it up was all it took for 13-year old singer/songwriter extraordinaire Mahalia to become the name on every London tastemaker’s lips this year. Tipped to be the next Corinne Bailey Rae, Adele – or, you know, herself – the Leicester hailing talent blessed SoulCulture TV with an interview and acoustic performance of “Let The World See The Light” by way of introduction – and we’re sure you’ll enjoy. Watch below.
Inspired by the likes of Bon Iver, Kate Nash, Corinne Bailey Rae, James Vincent McMorrow, Josh Kumra and “anything that mum and dad played – but mostly [their own] singing,” it was after winning a school local talent contest a couple of years ago that Mahalia began seriously nurturing her skills, composing songs on guitar and piano.
Catching Ed Sheeran’s ear, the triple-platinum star’s supportive tweets then set the ball really rolling for her – all the way to a record label bidding war, says the rumour mill. With great songs, no gimmicks, and an attention snatching voice [all beyond her years] – I think it’s clear this young lady has a bright future in front of her. Press play.
