Judge rejects Buju Banton new trial plea | News

A Florida judge has rejected Buju Banton’s plea for a new trial.

The 39-year-old Grammy-winning reggae singer was sentenced in June 2011 to 10 years on cocaine conspiracy and trafficking charges. In June of this year, appeals court judges upheld that conviction as well a conviction on gun possession charges that had initially been tossed out.

In July, Banton’s attorney filed a motion seeking a new trial. Judge James Moody denied that request Tuesday because he felt a new trial was unnecessary due to the appeals court rulings.

The gun charge carries an additional five-year sentence.
