During a recent sit-down with HardKnock TV, Brooklyn MCs Joey Bada$$ and CJ Fly chop it up about how they’ve been influenced by MF Doom and J Dilla, where their vintage, old school Hip-Hop-inspired Pro Era crew fits in today’s club-heavy music landscape, how they feel about comparisons to Odd Future and much more.
When asked where Pro Era fits into today’s party music environment, Joey says they’re out to put their own stamp on the game.
“They say we underground but what we tryin’ to do is make the underground mainstream,” said the 17-year-old with the old soul.
He also cleared up the confusion about his “loyalty over royalty” stance, which some misinterpreted as a slight to rap’s pioneers.
“That wasn’t directed to anybody at all; that’s just the type of person I am,” he said. “Who I came up with is my friends before anything.”
To hear what the MCs had to say about their favorite non-NY rappers and producers, who in the game today they’d like to work with, finishing high school and everything else, check out the full interview below.
