Having made various announcements regarding his highly anticipated Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album already, namely by sharing its release date, double-disc format and two existing singles, “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” and “Bitch Bad”, Lupe Fiasco sat down with Hot 93.7′s Kevin W. Reese to give a little more insight into his upcoming project.
Speaking on the concept behind the record, Lupe explained that he wanted to share his own views of the “American experience.”
“I took a very simple route and I just chose to express, or try and tell, my idea of the American experience,” he said. “That ‘Great American’ part is American history, American philosophy, American phenomenon, American society, the American dream, the American nightmare.
“When you tell the story of America true, it’s as controversial, it’s as inspiring , it’s as terrible, it’s as beautiful as anything else.”
In the discussion, the Chicago native also addressed the issue of commercial versus underground hip-hop, particularly with relation to radio play, and (on a tangent) spoke on the health issues that plague the U.S.A. You can catch the interview in full below.
