Although the premise of a beatmaker – particularly in hip-hop – is to compliment the vocal efforts of an emcee, many producers transcend this initial ideal. Clams Casino is certainly one of them. Having quickly established himself as one of rap’s premier sonic architects, the 20-something New Jersey native commands the type of respect to put out projects purely consisting of instrumentals, and for people to listen.
Introducing the second installment in his aptly-titled Instrumental Mixtape series, Clammy Clams sedates our soberness once more with those sequences of yawning synths, elongated basslines and abandoned soundscapes over 14 cuts, the majority originally produced for A$AP Rocky, Lil B and Mac Miller, with an unreleased bonus entitled “Human” thrown in for good measure.
