The announcement was made by Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly during the channel’s meeting with The Television Critics Association in California on Monday evening.
The star will be reportedly earning a whopping 18 million dollar paycheck for the role, which will give her the title of highest paid judge on any reality show.
The future of the show seemed to hang in balance last week after stars Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler both quit their judging roles last week but fans have reacted in delight with the latest signing.
The role seems like a natural progression for Mariah after she appeared on the show as a guest mentor in 2008. tweeted: It’s gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent, she tweeted.
She will be joining the line up of Randy Jackson and one other name expected to be announced soon with the show airing in January 2013
