Drake may have been punked for getting a tattoo of Aaliyah on his back last year, but he’s getting the last laugh. According to HipHopDX, the YMCMB artist, despite little prior experience behind the boards, will be executive producing the late singer’s upcoming posthumous album.
Details surrounding the record are scarce, but Drizzy has been hinting at something special with Aaliyah, who was killed in an airplane crash in 2001, for months now. Back in March, the rapper told Tim Westwood, “I have some great Aaliyah news coming soon. Just some special things. Just gave you that, just a little. Because I said, I’m with Westwood, so I can’t not. But great things, great things for music, period.”
In addition to his work on Aaliyah’s next album, Drake has reportedly secured the late R&B star’s vocals for a single of his own. The rapper is expected to debut the new song live at the OVO Fest, which takes place this Saturday (August 5th) in Toronto.
We’ll update you with more details as they become available.
