Dormant since the release of their True Notes Vol. 1 compilation in 2004, Okayplayer Records, a subsidiary of the well-respected music website co-founded and frequented by The Roots, are back in business. The imprint will run as a digital-only brand, and will see releases from former Def Jux and Interscope-signee Danny!, and long-time engineer to Jay-Z, Young Guru, mark their return. The announcement came earlier today from The Roots drummer, Questlove.
“I’ve been waiting years for the right moment to re-launch the label and I’m eager to kick things off with Danny!” said Questo.
Okayplayer President Daniel Petruzzi adds, “This provides another avenue for our brand to further establish what we stand for by aligning ourselves with artists and projects that speak to our core values. Not only does Danny!’s sound and lyrical content match our aesthetic, but his DIY approach to production, promotion, artwork, and branding make him an ideal candidate to partner with.”
September 25th officially marks the label’s re-opening, when Danny!’s long-awaited sixth studio album, Payback, will finally arrive, followed by Young Guru’s instrumental breakbeat project, Essentials Vol. 1, on October 9th.
