“Your favourite rapper’s a damn lie” rails Atlanta’s go-to hood on his fierce, loosely-aimed diss track “Favourite Rapper,” from The Gift of Discernment. The video for the song captures Alley Boy in the north-east of Atlanta, joined by his crew and a hyped-up Pusha T, the former armed to the teeth.
The Youtube trolls of America suspect the guns are aimed at other rappers from the ATL, maybe T.I. or Jeezy, but for me, it’s a shame that Alley Boy can’t maintain the more political overtones of the “Intro” and “Cops on the Block” (to be found on this year’s earlier Nigganati tape).
Instead, this is standard, thuggish, black-and-white fare (in both a visual sense and metaphorically), marked out only by the energy with which Alley Boy and Pusha attack the catchy chipmunk soul production. That production, not to mention the crazy album art, are the main reasons to download this latest tape.
