Earl Sweatshirt – “Chum” | Music Video

Michell C. Clark December 4, 2012 Hip Hop, Music, Music Videos Comments

The video for Earl Sweatshirt‘s “Chum,” a melancholy and reflective listen, is appropriately suppressed and minimalistic. The monochromatic understated visuals allow emphasis to remain on the heartfelt and revealing monologue that Earl delivers, partially explaining bits and pieces of his mysterious past.

As Earl speaks of his spiritual foundations and unveils some of the troubles of his past, dark shadows move across his face, at times almost totally concealing it before receding again to allow his solemn expression to shine through. In fact, Earl’s countenance is the only face that can be seen throughout the entire video, which is quite appropriate given the intimate nature of his words.

Quirky special effects take on a surreal feel, and a viewer could easily miss them if not watching carefully. Odd Future is typically known for its over-the-top visuals, but this release proves that minimalism can be just as effective, if not more.
