It was less than a week ago that we brought you the exciting news that songstress Lana Del Rey was enlisting rapper A$AP Rocky to star alongside her in her video for “National Anthem,” the next single to be taken from her debut album Born To Die, and now we can give you the visuals.
The epic, movie-like video stands at nearly eight minutes long, directed by Anthony Mandler, and begins with Lana giving the classic rendition of “Happy Birthday” that Marilyn Monroe once gave to former president John F. Kennedy.
Throughout the video, Rocky continues to give his depiction of JFK while Lana steps into the role of his wife Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis – aka Jackie O. Most of the video is happy and jubilant as we see the pair get lovingly close, playing with heir children, but towards the end the mood turns a lot darker. Given the JFK reference I think you can guess what happens.
The video is shot to give the effect of an old school camera lens with the edges burnt black in contrast to the vibrant bursts of colour used throughout, attesting to Rocky’s previous description of the video being “some cool, trippy shit.” In an age where we see so many videos all looking the same, Lana Del Rey has excelled herself to bring some artistic creativity to the mix.
The single “National Anthem” is out on July 8th. Check out the video below.
