Veteran MC and Wu-Tang Clansman Masta Killa drops what may very well be the shortest two-for-one video in history with “What You See/Cali Sun.”
The brevity of these twin clips is probably for the better, though, ’cause both of these songs are fuckin’ terrible. Like, seriously. And this is coming from a longtime Wu fan.
I don’t even really know what to say about this corny shit. When it comes to the hierarchy of Wu-Tang lyricists, Noodles has probably never been at the top of anyone’s list, but he’s had flashes of dopeness on more than one occasion. He came with it on “Duel of the Iron Mic,” he brought the ruckus on “Da Mystery of Chessboxin’,” hell, I even liked his verse on “Triumph.” But these shits right here? Nah. Definition of the wackness.
And then there are the videos.
Actually, they’re more like glorified home movies than actual music videos. One sees Noodles at what looks like a New Year’s Eve party/concert, and the other is set on a California boardwalk. It’s not that director Jeff Pliskin did a terrible job or anything — the shots are all clean and crisp — it’s just not what I’ve come to expect from a Wu-Tang video. There’s no grit, no grime, and way too much sunshine.
Needless to say, I’m not impressed. If this is what Masta Killa’s purported Loyalty Is Royalty album is gonna sound like, I’ll pass.
