“…I didn’t rap about dope, nor did I sell it / I guess the story of a country boy just ain’t compelling…”
They say “good things come to those who wait” and after a week or so of waiting it’s finally here: BIG K.R.I.T.’s XXL Freshmen Freestyle video. Not to say that the other “freestyle” videos weren’t good, as some of them were, but what makes this one particularly special is the fact that it’s by multi-talented and articulate MC/producer who’s not affraid to turn the mirror on himself to point out his flaws as well as offer an introspective look at the world around him.
Not so much of a freestyle as it is a recite-style [see what I did there], Def Jam Recording artist Big K.R.I.T [born Justin Scott] spits the last verse from his self produced first single, “Dreamin’”, off his second solo album Returnof4eva (out March 22nd). My advice to those of you that know little about the Mississippi born wordsmith is to watch the video, absorb what he says and then listen to the full track below… trust me, once you do that… it’ll all make sense.
Listen… Big K.R.I.T – “Dreamin’” [Prod. by Big K.R.I.T]
Below, the humble MC talks about meeting his fellow freshmen…
It was definitely overwhelming, because—one, with the whole [wearing] make-up thing, it’s not really something I’m into. I don’t think I need that. [Laughs]. That was a little weird. And, just the whole preparation. Doing the round table, the rappers discussing their thoughts and opinions, the cypher and stuff like that, and then being able to just have fun at the shoot. Normally as an artist I don’t really have fun at photo shoots, but I was with my peers, and everybody laughing and kicking it, it was in-tune man. It wasn’t Hollywood, [with] everybody being bougie and all of that shit. Everybody was just down to earth and was really excited to be there. Everybody is putting out quality music, so it’s a new generation of rappers. I’m excited for what’s to come. Just making music that I feel was important.
