Chris Dave and the DRUMHEDZ cover J Dilla’s “Welcome 2 Detroit” | New Music

Michell C. Clark December 5, 2012 Hip Hop, Music, New Music, Remixes Comments

Almost seven years after his passing, legendary producer J Dilla‘s influence is still felt by a host of fans and musicians alike. Chris Dave and the DRUMHEDZ show their appreciation for the Detroit producer in a special way delivering a beautifully complex acoustic rendition of Dilla’s “Welcome 2 Detroit,” which was the intro track on his 2001 album of the same name.

DRUMHEDZ, a collective comprised of Pino Palladino on bass, Kebbi Williams on sax, Isaiah Thomas & Tim Stewart on guitar, Pookie on keys, and Chris Dave himself on drums, does an excellent job of building on the foundation laid by Dilla with their different instruments and interpretations, transforming J Dilla’s hip-hop stylings into a soundtrack fit for an upscale lounge. Chris Dave and DRUMHEDZ are currently on the road in Europe for a tour, and the DRUMHEDZ mixtape is set to release on December 11th.
