French Montana f/ Curren$y, Mac Miller – “It Was a Good Year” (prod. Harry Fraud) | New Music

French Montana is brimming with confidence at the moment. Hot off the heels of his and Diddy’s Adorn Remix, which saw him ride a classic East Coast instrumental, he’s decided to revisit one of the West Coast’s most famous beats- Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day”.

Whilst anyone who remembers the way Ice Cube told this story first time round will be hostile to French and Mac Miller rapping over it, if you treat this for what it is, then “It Was a Good Year” is a solid enough mixtape track. Harry Fraud stays true to the smoothed-out original, and guest-star Curren$y, who knows how to make “music to ride to”, references Ice Cube’s ballgame braggadocio with his hook, “Never know hoes, might make the triple double”. There’s no attempt to tell a story here, and no question of matching Ice Cube’s charisma; but then, as I’ve said before, French knows his limitations.

“It Was a Good Year” is the first single from French Montana’s forthcoming mixtape Mac & Cheese 3, which is set to drop some time before the end of this year. Check it out below.
