We haven’t heard any music from Roots Manuva since his last album 4everevolution dropped late last year, but now at least we have something new from one of the UKs most innovative emcees, a collaboration with Kope entitled “Natural“.
The rather minimalist track is guided along by the thud of deep bass, kept ticking by finger snaps and compressed percussion, then given the silver-lining of a highly pitched piano loop, providing the perfect arena for the Stockwell emcee and his partner to perform their slick poetry. Kope opens with a cocky verse fired straight off the hip, before Roots’ effortless hook rolls off his tongue and he takes it away with what he calls “rap for hipsters, and fashion casualties”.
“Natural” will appear as the opening track on a limited edition “Banana Skank” 12″ which Roots’ label Big Dada will be releasing at the Indie Label Market, Spitalfields Market this Saturday, 1st December. The special edition bright yellow EP includes another Kope feature entitled “Party Time”, and only 100 copies will be available, so make sure you get over to Spitalfields early to secure your copy.
