The xx cover Wham!’s “Last Christmas” for BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge [Video]

Indie-pop trio The xx recently stopped by BBC Radio One’s Live Lounge to perform a special mystery cover, and the result was a truly stunning rendition of a Christmas classic: Wham!’s “Last Christmas.”

Stripping back the original synthpop beat and taking George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s wistful vocals into a sparser landscape, the London group add that extra element of yearning to the seasonal favourite, and it makes for an absolutely heartbreaking few minutes. Around the two minute mark in particular, Romy’s vocals and Jamie’s hard-hitting synth-pads really create a gothic, Chromatics-style romance, and if you’re still reading this you’re missing out on some seriously good music.
