Well this is a surprise. Brooklyn rapper, Dipset associate and all-round heavy hitter Torae has chosen to drop a freestyle over Alicia Keys‘ downtempo ballad “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart,” from her ’09 album The Element of Freedom – and it bangs.
Whereas the original song focused on a woman trying to recover from heartbreak, Torae’s version sees him indulge in his lust for “vixens,” the models, actresses and video girls he sees everyday. In the course of a couple of minutes rapping, the NYC man name-drops everyone from Joe Budden‘s ex (Tahiry) to DJ Drama‘s ex-wife, video vixen Summer Walker. If he corrupts Alicia’s vision, he takes her instrumental’s military-style drums and turns them into a different kind of banger.
All this pretty much agrees with Tor’s statement about the instrumental: “B.I.G would have a field day if he was still around.” If Tor, talented as he is, can turn this sweet ballad on its head, who knows what Big Poppa might have done to it?
