Yasiin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, links up with dead prez and Mike Flo to pay musical tribute to Trayvon Martin, the 17-year old who was shot and killed, unarmed, in Sanford, Florida in February, provoking wide concern, distress and international protest.
Recorded in New Orleans, the trio take hold of Nas’ revered “Made You Look” beat to make a statement – take a look behind the scenes of their recording process in the video below as Yasiin and m1 share their thoughts.
“Particularly if you come from poor communities, you come from black communities in this country, and you see a casual, systemic indifference to black life – you have to respond. It’s in your own self interest, it’s not even out-standing or courageous – it’s a survival issue,” says Yasiin.
“Either we gonna fix this or we gonna just… agree to be slaves. And that don’t honour nothing that we’ve ever been about, that don’t honour the legacy of everybody that came before us. When it’s to promote an album or project or to have a photo opp, cats is there in their best, their brightest, and they’re early. It’s a priority.”
He continues, “So if this ain’t a priority… What is?”
