Before I say anything about this, it should probably be noted that I’m one of those people (perhaps the only person) who thinks The xx are secretly an “Urban” act. I don’t care what their Wikipedia page says, those are R&B songs and R&B melodies, as are these, from Toronto act The Weeknd.
The reason I bring up the Mercury-winning Londoners is because hearing this for the first time, I felt the same way I did when I first heard them. It’s fresh, urgent, dark, moody, sexy and interesting. With that said, a friend just walked into the office and asked whether I was listening to Jay Sean so I shall let you guys judge for yourselves below.
