MTV’s VMA 2010: The Fail, The WTF, The LOL & The “Eh?”

Tahirah Edwards Byfield September 13, 2010 Music, TV Comments

It’s the day after the night before. While I chose sleep over watching online streams til 5am with many of our fellow European readers, the interwebs have given me all I need to make, what I think, is a well-rounded judgment about the awards – Lady Gaga won everything and I’ma letchu finish but last year’s was better. That said, when MTV UK screens the VMAs I’ll probably watch just to see host Chelsea Handler‘s rather humorous casual racism and inappropriateness (even though, from reports she couldn’t nearly top the homie Russell Brand‘s lack of boundaries).

Forgive me for this gossip-blog-esque trashing I’m about to give some of the following artists, but this tomfoolery deserves it.

The FAIL: Will.i.am shows us when it’s okay to go Blackface

NEVER. That’s when. NEVER. Brother William, it wasn’t right THEN and it sure isn’t right now. Sidebar: I  refuse to press play on “Check It Out”, and have managed to avoid listening to it thus far.

The WTF: Gaga and Lauri Ann Gibson kiss

Personally I think Lady Gaga looked pretty conservative on the white carpet. In fact, it’s not Gaga or her attire that makes this image a WTF at all, it’s choreographer Lauri Ann Gibson. At first glance I really thought Lady G was kissing a man in drag. Alas, it wasn’t a man, but Lauri Ann. Uh, bad angle, maybe?

The LOL: Rihanna and Katy Perry are “Fancy”

“Oh you fancy, huh?” Rihanna asks Katy after Drake, Swizz Beatz and Mary J Blige perform.

The “Eh?”: Kanye West’s “Runaway” performance

Why are you still apologising, Yeezy? Please stop now. I’m starting to get embarrassed for you. Even Chris Brown’s award show “comeback” felt less cringeworthy. Sidebar: Taylor Swift’s ummm…”diss track” to Kanye is definitely the runner-up for the top “Eh?” moment.

About The Author

Being born to a father who used to own an independent reggae label and a mother who sang meant a love for melodies, chords, vocals and beats was naturally infused in Tahirah Edwards Byfield. Unfortunately that love for music wasn’t accompanied by any type of musical ability! So the young creative married her love of tuneage with her other favourite form of expression, literature. Combined with the other thing she’s pretty good at – talking too much – Tahirah enjoys waxing lyrical about music and street culture on paper and on radio.
