On his recent visit to London from across the pond, adept lyricist Homeboy Sandman touched base with SoulCulture TV to talk about his varied musical influences, dropping law school to follow his Hip Hop dreams, and the integrity of his current label, Stones Throw.
Having grown up in a musically inclined family on a varied diet of jazz, salsa, merengue, Hip Hop, funk, R&B and soul, the Queens, New York native takes inspiration from a range of revered talents that came before him, including Black Thought, LL Cool J, Mos Def, GZA, James Brown, Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder.
With production credits including rthentic RTNC, Oddisee, Oh No, 6th Sense and J57, Homeboy Sandman’s new LP First Of A Living Breed is set for release on September 18 and ranks as the emcee’s fourth album to date, but his first to come through Stones Throw Records.
“What really attracted me to Stones Throw in particular is they have creative integrity. They’re signing guys based on wanting to put out the dopest music,” he enthuses.
“They’re signing artists that they believe are going to be creative, individuals, on their own… And that’s what I’m all about. They’re not looking to compromise the musical integrity at any cost, which is why we fall in line with one another.”
The project comes supported by an accompanying 38-date US and Canadian tour with Brother Ali in September/October – visit Homeboy’s website for tickets and information.
