SoulCulture TV caught up with hotly tipped West Coast emcee Kendrick Lamar – co-signed by Dr Dre and working on his long awaited Detox album – earlier this week amid the pandemonium at SXSW, the action-packed annual festival/conference currently taking place in Austin, Texas and flocked to by music, film and tech professionals and enthusiasts around the globe.
Currently out there reporting for SoulCulture with HP, Versetti asked Kendrick to reflect on his lyrics written to date and pick out his favourite verse.
“My favourite verse has to be ‘The Heart Pt. 2,’” Lamar says, selecting a track from his recently released project, (O)verly (D)edicated.
“Hands down, because it got so emotional in the booth I actually dropped a tear, I had to come out, fall back, gather my thoughts all over again.”
The rapper, highlighted as one of XXL’s 2011′s Freshmen, reflects, “I was speaking on a lot of shit, very subtle but it meant a lot to me, when I talk about my city, the city of Compton, when I talk about my uncles – all my uncles is locked up in the pen, life – these people in Compton had me on their shoulders. They wasn’t 100% the best people in the world but they was my uncles and they mean a lot to me and they took care of me.”
